Congratulations on winning the Formula 2 class in the 2019 UF1 Winter Series Championship.
Tell us a little bit about yourself; where are you from and how long have you been racing?
I’m from Bulgaria. I first started racing when I moved to South Africa 18 years ago with 1/8 nitro on-road.
Wow, so you’ve been around the world racing prior to landing in the US! That must have been a lot of fun.
Yes it was. I was able to learn alot from those experiences.
It’s also a well known fact that your home track is 702 Raceway in Las Vegas, NV. That’s quite the long drive every month to race Formula 1 cars! What was the motivation to keep coming to SoCal for each event?
The motivation was to meet the racers, learn different RC tracks, challenge myself and others, and experimenting different setups. I’m by profession an engineer and like to test different setups.
The engineering part I’m sure helps a lot when trying new setups. Helps you understand what ‘should’ happen with each change.
This was your first UF1 series. Tell us a little bit about your experience?
Originally me and the guys from 702 didn’t come prepared. We just wanted to see the TQ track and meet some of the racers. We started winning some of the races in the beginning and from then we got more motivated to continue and promote the Vegas 702 team. We had a lot of fun.
Ya, I remember that. I think you shocked some of the locals as well.
Round 1 of the Series saw you take the overall win. After that, it seemed like the competition was getting a little bit tougher with each race. What was your game plan after Round 1?
Safety first! My goal wasn’t to win the individual races but to just earn points to stay on top in the overall competition. Also I wanted to limit any damage to my car.
Sounds like a solid plan – and it worked!
Tell us about your car; what chassis and electronics were you running?
Exotek Conversion and R1 Wurks for the battery, speed control and servo. Big thanks to Mike from Exotek for designing and making such a great car. I’m very satisfied with it; worked perfectly on both carpet and asphalt.
Did you run the same car all season both indoors and outdoors?
Yes.
How was your experience outdoors?
Originally I raced only on asphalt for most of my RC experience. I started racing on carpet for the first time a few years ago. It wasn’t that difficult to get used to asphalt at Cal Raceway. I actually prefer outdoor.
I agree – outdoor requires throttle control to limit wheelspin. You also have to balance front and rear grip quite a bit differently on asphalt than carpet.
Exactly
Taking the overall win in F2, you will now be running in the F1 class. Are you looking forward to that? Are you making any changes to your race program for the F1 class?
I look forward to it. I plan on practicing more at Cal Raceway before the competition starts. I’m preparing a new car for the new season. I’m teaming up with Steve Jackson and I’ll do my best by preparing my best.
This upcoming season we’ll be running 4 races outdoor, 4 races indoor. What’s your plan of attack for this season?
To be honest, I don’t know exactly. I adapt to the circumstances.
Well, to let you know, we are expanding the Series to different tracks this next season – one being 702 Raceway. Are you looking forward to an event at your home track?
Yes. I hope that we can hold at least two events at 702 and bring some of the guys from California.
There may be an opportunity for two events there – we’ll have to wait and see.
We are re-introducing the Constructor’s Championship this season. Are you interested in running that and if so, do you have someone in mind you’d like to team up with?
I’m running with Steve Jackson. We make a good team.
That’s a strong team! Steve has always been a great competitor to watch and actually race against. Will be good to see him come back out.
Final question: What advice do you have for someone looking to get into the UF1 Series?
My advice is to pick up a chassis, build it and don’t be afraid to join us. Don’t doubt yourself. We all have a lot of fun and we’re a very supportive crew.
Agreed – everyone is out here to help.
Well Boris, thanks for you time and congrats on your Formula 2 win! Excited to see how you’ll do in the F1 class at all the different tracks! Good luck next year to you and Steve!
