UF1 F1-Class Qualifying

UF1 F1 Class Qualifying

This article will outline the two classes available in the UF1 and what it takes to get qualified for the Formula 1 class.

The UF1 has offers two classes – F1 and F2. Everyone that comes out to race is automatically in the F2 class, meaning you must follow the F2 ruleset (see the rules here: https://uf1rc.com/rules-and-regulations/). The F2 class is set to allow drivers to learn the Series – learn setups, practice driving a RWD car, experience pit stops, etc – and basically enjoy the unique UF1 format.

The F1 class is a bit more involved, thus requiring someone that wants to race in it to qualify for the class. Speeds are faster, car liveries are required and knowledge of car setup is almost a must.

To qualify for the F1 class, we select a date (typically a practice day at Cal Raceway) during which we procure 4 15-minute qualifying sessions. During that 15-minute session, a F2 driver wanting to qualify for the F1 class must post 3 CONSECUTIVE LAPS, hitting a target lap time. That target time is set based on the track layout by the UF1 officials – not too hard, but not too easy.

So, let’s say the target time is a 12.5 second lap. You must, during that 15-minute session, hit 3 consecutive laps of at LEAST a 12.5 – a 12.6 is not acceptable.

We’ve decided to do this for 2 reasons- 1) it makes the F1 class a bit more prestigious, like it should be, and 2) it helps keep people who are not quite ready for the F1 speeds out of the way of the drivers that are.

Don’t be frustrated if you don’t qualify for the F1 class – there are still plenty of drivers in the F2 class to contend with, and the winner of the F2 class at the end of the Season automatically gets promoted to the F1 class!

NOTE: If you are already an F1 driver, you do NOT need to requalify – once an F1 driver, always an F1 driver! These sessions are for Formula 2 drivers trying to qualify for the Formula 1 class next season.
